Architecture

Concept

The site on Via Alessandria, at the corner of Via Lodi, is occupied by a building intended for services sector activities, which appears as an unfinished corner of the street. On Via Alessandria, the building is contiguous to a four-storey residential building: the difference in height between the two completely reveals the blind façade of the latter. On Via Lodi, on the other hand, the site borders a private passageway owned by a car repair shop.

The building does not show elements of particular architectural value, but in its construction elements resides the memory of a neighbourhood identity, working-class and productive, that no longer exists today.

The proposal to transform the site thus starts out less from the recovery of an architecture, but rather of an identity, and from the desire to reconstruct that missing street corner. The complex, thus conceived, wants to become a new characterising element for the neighbourhood, thanks to the use of new building typologies that look towards the future of the city.

Architecture

Development

The new building, designed for residential use, brings together two different building types: a slatted and a towered one. The vertical structure is built on Via Alessandria, in continuity with the blind end of the adjoining building, while the horizontal structure closes the space of the internal courtyard, redesigning the street line on Via Lodi.

The residential offer follows the “green” transformation of the urban residential typology, implementing the possibilities of opening to the outside, from the large windows to the hanging gardens on the upper floors. This idea of openness, and of the relationship be-tween inside and outside, is further confirmed by the distribution, developed on the façade with a large staircase bordered towards the outside by a translucent wall, which allows the perception of the up and down inside the building.

The project thus fits into the current of renewal that is currently happening in Aurora, a dis-trict that is changing its appearance, showing dynamism and enthusiasm. In this context, the reconstruction of a street corner that does not exist today takes on a broader value, transforming the life of the neighbourhood and catalysing unprecedented community inter-actions.
